Introduction: Anthropometry is a fundamental tool for the identification and selection of sporting talent, injury prevention and training programming.
Objectives: The aim was to contribute to the knowledge of the anthropometric profile of amateur soccer players competing in regional leagues in the province of Jujuy (Argentina).
Methods:Thirty-six males with a mean age of 19.55 ± 3.28 years were studied, analysing body size, body composition (using two- and five-component weight fractionation models) and somatotype. All measurements and techniques were performed according to ISAK (International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry) standards.
Results: The results showed few differences between players in field position, although forwards had greater height and total and relative adiposity compared to midfielders and outside defenders. The average height, weight and body mass index were 171.22 ±5.72cm, 64.27 ±8.58 kg and 20.45 ±2.66 kg/m2. According to the 5-component model the percentage masses were skin: 6.10%, bone: 12.98%, muscle: 45.07%, adipose: 25.12% and residual: 10.61%. The balanced mesomorphic somatotype (endomorphy: 2.98 ± 1.21; mesomorphy: 4.42 ± 0.95; ectomorphy: 2.82 ± 1.08) is close to that characteristic of elite soccer players.
Conclusions: Anthropometric differences are small by field play position, although forwards have greater height and adiposity. The balanced mesomorphic somatotype is indicative of good muscular development and is close to elite football players.
