Resumen

Adolescence is a critical period for physical and cognitive development, during which increased consumption of fast food and soft drinks can adversely affect nutritional status and brain function. This research aims to analyze the impact of fast food and soft drink consumption on nutritional status and brain health among high school students at SMA N 9 Bandar Lampung. Design use cross-sectional study was conducted with a simple random sample of grade X–XI students. Data were collected via questionnaire assessing nutritional status, consumption patterns, nutrition knowledge, brain health, and family socioeconomic characteristics. Analyses included descriptive statistics, Spearman’s correlation, and logistic regression. Higher pocket money was associated with increased frequency of fast food consumption (OR=1.333; 95% CI: 0.640–2.778) and soft drink intake, whereas malnutrition status reduced both combined consumption frequency (OR=0.178; 95% CI: 0.034–0.937) and fast food frequency (OR=0.423; 95% CI: 0.208–0.863). Nutrition knowledge correlated positively with nutritional status (OR=0.486; 95% CI: 0.285–0.828), and better brain health was linked to lower risk of malnutrition (OR=0.529). Physical activity, higher among male adolescents, supported both brain health and nutritional status. This is the first study to integrate direct assessment of adolescent brain health as an outcome in the analysis of fast food and soft drink consumption patterns and socioeconomic factors in Indonesian youth. Socioeconomic factors and nutrition knowledge shape consumption behaviors that impact adolescents’ nutritional status and brain health. Holistic interventions are needed to enhance nutrition education, financial access, and brain-health promotion programs.
